Navy League honors Sea Cadets and war veteran

MOJAVE - Nearly one hundred people attended a barbecue for the Bakersfield Council Navy League at Mojave Airport Saturday, at the Hansen Hangar, honoring the O'Callahan Division Sea Cadets and L/CPL Spencer Hale, USMC, E Co BLT 2/1 15th MEU, recently returned from Operation Iraqi Freedom, and stationed at Camp Pendleton.

Hale served aboard the USS Rushmore, LSD 47. The Rushmore and Duluth (LPD 6), along with the USS Tarawa (LHA 1), made up the Tarawa Amphibious Ready Group, deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Plaques of appreciation were presented to L/CPL Hale by Quarter Master Matt Detloff, Mojave VFW, Post 7156; Michele Behrens, President Tehachapi Republican Women, Federated, and Cathy Hansen, president Bakersfield Council Navy League.

The Mojave First Southern Baptist Church Youth Group; Mojave VFW, Post # 7156; Little Miss Mojave, Megan Gaines; Mojave Movement Arts Center; Pat Gardner; Michele Behrens; Mellor Printing in Mojave and the Bakersfield Council, Navy League were faithful to our troops overseas and sent many boxes with letters and goodies through Operation Interdependence™.

Operation Interdependence™ sent certificates of recognition to the individuals and civic groups in Mojave and Tehachapi who expressed their patriotism and support of the men and women serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

O'Callahan Division Commanding Officer Wayne Gant presented awards and certificates of completion to the 2003 class of Sea Cadets.

The Navy League formally established the Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) and Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC) in 1958 for young people, ages 11 through 17.

The basic objectives of both programs are: (1) to help young Americans become more patriotic and responsible citizens, and (2) to help young Americans understand the role of the maritime services in national defense and in maintaining the economic viability of our nation.
