This holiday season we should remember the American soldiers that aren't able to be home.
We depend on them to keep our country safe and free, while they depend on our support.
Nina Gayheart, better known as "Momma Bear" is a coordinator for Operation Interdependence.
James is her son and a part of the United States Marine Corps.
We're so glad to have the two of you joining us today.
Q: So, Nina tell me what Operation Interdependence is all about.
A: Operation Interdependence is a civilian to military delivery system. It actually delivers care packages to troops on the front lines. To me, it is the most sufficient and efficient way to reach our troops because it doesn't impact our military in the delivery process. We inspect our packages before they are shipped and the military knows they are safe.
Q: James, why is it important to support these soldiers until the very last one comes home from Iraq?
Q: Nina, what is your organization's wish list and how can we make it come true?
A: We need personal care items such as lotions because the climate is so dry. Also little candies and granola bars. The soldiers could also use disposable razors and kleenex. These items are placed in a baggy. The personal note is the most important item to be included. We need schools to write notes and deliver them to "OI" so they can be added to the packages. We also need volunteers to put the items in the bags and seal them properly and then help ship them. We need space to be able to store the items that people donate. We have already placed barrels at all the Austin fire departments.
